 About the Chicopee, Massachusetts Area Chicopee is a city located on the Connecticut River and Chicopee Rivers in Hampden County, Massachusetts. Chicopee was an old mill town that has grown into a busy city with a modern, international charm. The Chamber of Commerce calls it, “The City of Opportunity.” Chicopee has been told that it means “birch bark place,” “place of the elms,” and “turbulent waters.” Chicopee is a Nipmuck name. The Nipmuck Indians were the native residents of the region before the English arrived. Chicopee was settled in 1640, but wasn’t a part of Springfield, Massachusetts until 1848.
Within Chicopee lies the Chicopee Memorial State Park in the Burnett Road neighborhood. Formerly known as the Cooley Brook Reservoir and Watershed, the area has been developed into a recreation area. The total area is 575 acres including two 25 acre ponds. Activities include swimming, fishing, picnicking, jogging and biking. Chicopee has a strong diversified economic base. The city continues to build a modern hub adding new jobs and thousands of square footage to new industrial, business and commercial space every year. Chicopee’s newest business park is the Chicopee River Business Park.
Chicopee is home to Westover Air Reserve Base, built in 1940. It has one of the largest runways on the east coast at 11,597 x 301 feet. Chicopee Westover Metropolitan Airport shares the runway. Westover Metropolitan Airport serves private and charter aircraft. Chicopee is 29 miles from Hartford, 92 miles from Boston, 90 miles from Albany, and 140 miles from New York City. Chicopee’s excellent transportation advantages have earned it the nickname: “Crossroads of New England.” Chicopee has 2 exits on the Mass Pike (I-90), and easy access to I-91 via I-291 and I-391.
